Cartridge Filter Technology Has Evolved — Has Yours?

This isn’t 2015 anymore — cartridge filter technology has come a long way. Today’s systems offer dramatically improved flow, finer filtration, and easier maintenance than older models. Larger surface areas, smarter internal layouts, and upgraded materials mean better water quality with less strain on your pump.

If you’re still running an outdated filter, you’re missing out on cleaner water and lower energy costs.

How Often Should You Clean Your Filter Cartridges?

The typical national standard of cleaning filter cartridges every six months might work in mild climates — but it doesn’t cut it here in Arizona. With our high dust levels, intense sun, and elevated phosphate content, your filtration system faces far more stress than average. Stretching cleanings to six months often leads to clogged cartridges, reduced circulation, and pressure that forces your pump to work overtime.

At BIG Family Pools, we recommend cleaning your cartridges every 3 to 4 months. Not only does this extend the life of your equipment, but it also ensures consistent flow through the entire system — especially critical if you rely on in-floor cleaning systems or advanced automation. When flow is restricted, cleaning heads don’t pop up properly, and water can’t circulate effectively. That leads to cloudy water, poor skimming, and inefficient chemical distribution.

And let’s be honest — cleaning a cartridge twice a year might be common, but it’s not professional. Good enough isn’t good enough when it comes to keeping your pool in peak condition. Clean filters mean clean water, efficient equipment, and fewer surprises.

How Long Do Filter Cartridges Last?

On a brand-new pool system, it’s not unusual for cartridge filters to wear out within two years — especially here in Arizona. The startup dust, heat, and harsh startup chemistry can put a lot of strain on those elements early on. Even in more stable conditions, filter cartridges don’t last forever. If you’re getting close to three years, it’s probably time to replace them.

At BIG Family Pools, we recommend replacing your filter cartridges every 3 years to keep your circulation strong, your in-floor system or vacuum functioning properly, and your equipment protected. Just because the filter is “still holding pressure” doesn’t mean it’s working at peak performance — and good enough isn’t good enough when it comes to protecting a system that costs thousands to replace.

But just as important as when you replace is what you replace them with. Skip the cheap, low-quality cartridges from Amazon. They’re often made overseas with inferior materials that clog quickly, clean poorly, and restrict water flow — leading to higher pressure, reduced system performance, and more frequent cleanings.

Our current go-to is OnCore filters. They’re made in the USA, built with high-quality materials, easy to clean, and priced fairly for the performance they deliver. We’ve tested a lot — and these stand out.

Better filters mean better water, better flow, and fewer headaches. Ask us about upgrading your cartridges during your next service.
